Practice and Personal Background

John R. Woodard, III, is a partner with the Tulsa, Oklahoma, law firm of Coffey, Senger & Woodard. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tulsa in l965 and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Tulsa, College of Law in December, l967. Following three years of trial practice as a Judge Advocate in the United States Marine Corps, Mr. Woodard returned to Tulsa and has been engaged in the active practice of law with emphasis in insurance coverage, personal injury, products liability and business litigation., as well as counseling individuals and businesses in corporate matters. Mr. Woodard is admitted to practice in the Courts of Oklahoma and before the United States District Courts in the Northern, Eastern and Western Districts of Oklahoma, the Western District of Texas, the United States Court of Appeals, Tenth Circuit, the United States Court of Military Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Woodard has been a lecturer for the Oklahoma Bar Association through its Continuing Legal Education Program, the University of Tulsa Continuing Legal Education Program and is author of "Punitive Damages for Bad Faith Breach of an Insurance Contract: It's Unconstitutional," 54 Oklahoma Bar Journal 1125, 1983. Mr. Woodard has also spoken at Defense Research Institute seminars and Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel programs. In 1999, he co-authored Discovery of Litigation Databases Stored on the Internet: A Basis for Libel, Volume 49, No. 4, Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel Quarterly 383-405. In 2008, he co-authored Standard of Care,published in Headache, The Journal of the American Headache Society. Mr. Woodard is a member of the Tulsa County Bar Association where he was voted Outstanding Young Lawyer in 1975, Outstanding Senior Lawyer in 2002 and honored with its Neil Bogan Award for professionalism in 2008. He has been a member of various committees of the Tulsa County Bar Association, as its Treasurer in 1976 and served as Chair of its Professionalism Committee in 2010. He is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association, serving as Chairman of the Insurance Section in 1983. He is a charter Life Fellow of the Tulsa County Bar Association Foundation and a Life Fellow of the Oklahoma Bar Association Foundation. Mr. Woodard served as President of his Law School Alumni Association in 2007, and was honored with the Law School's Lifetime Achievement in Law Award in 2011. Mr. Woodard is presently a member of the Oklahoma Association of Defense Counsel having served as a Director and as its President in 1983, and a Past President of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel. He was a Director of the Defense Research Institute from 1994 to February, 1997, and returned to the DRI Board upon becoming President of the FDCC in July 1997. He also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Defense Research Institute. He was elected to the American Board of Trial Advocates in 1991 and was President of its Oklahoma Chapter (2008). Mr. Woodard has been an American Bar Association member since 1968, and chaired the Trial Techniques Committee of its Torts & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS). He is the Prime Member for Tulsa, Oklahoma for Association of Defense Trial Attorneys. Mr. Woodard has been selected by his peers as one of the Best Lawyers in America for the past 24 years and once again named a Super Lawyers in Oklahoma for 2022. He became a Fellow of Litigation Counsel of America in 2014. Involved in the Tulsa Community, Mr. Woodard has previously served as President of Family and Childrens' Services, Chairman of the University of Tulsa Undergraduate Research Challenge (TURC) and served on the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries of Tulsa, Inc. for nine years. He has served as legal counsel for Tulsa Opera, Inc. and was its Board president from 2015-2017.
