Practice and Personal Background

Jim Craven is involved in all areas of Wiggin and Dana’s litigation practice. He has significant experience in resolving complicated disputes through mediation, arbitration, and litigation. His diverse practice includes representing clients in commercial disputes, product liability claims, complex personal injury and professional malpractice matters, tax appeals, and toxic torts. Jim has also has extensive experience in proceedings before administrative agencies. Jim is Co-Chair of DRI’s Medical Liability and Health Law subcommittee on obstetrical law and is co-chair of the February 2009 Medical Liability and Health Law meeting. Jim is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association (Litigation Section and eDiscovery Task Force) and an elected member to the CBA House of Delegates. Jim serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the New Haven County Bar Foundation, is on the Executive Committee of the Connecticut Defense Lawyers Association and serves on the CDLA Rules Committee. Jim is also a member of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys. Jim recently was selected and served on the Connecticut Chief Justice’s Judicial Performance Evaluation Committee and is on the Advisory Board of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program. Jim received his B.A. in Economics from Dickinson College in 1990 and his J.D in 1994 from Case Western Reserve University School of Law cum laude where he was a member of the Dean’s Tutorial Society, the Case Western Reserve Law Review, and Health Matrix: the Journal of Law-Medicine. Before joining Wiggin and Dana LLP, Jim served in the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Fourth Infantry Division (Mechanized) as a Legal Assistance Attorney, Trial Counsel, and Senior Trial Counsel. During that time, Jim represented soldiers, retirees, and family members in numerous civil and administrative matters and also served as the Division Tax Attorney. Jim was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Achievement Medal during his military service. (Jim is currently volunteering for operation standby with the American Bar Association’s, Family Law Section Military Committee) Jim has contributed to numerous publications and lectures and is active in the community. He has presented at DRI’s Annual Meeting, Connecticut Bar Association CLE’s, Connecticut Hospital Association events and has served on a panel for the Connecticut Pediatric Society’s Annual Conference. He has helped to prepare the Connecticut Health Lawyers Association’s “Connecticut Law Update”, has contributed to the Connecticut Practice Series treatise Unfair Trade Practices and has helped Chair CLE programs for the Connecticut Defense Lawyers Association. In 2008, Jim received Wiggin and Dana’s Pro Bono award for his litigation work for Statewide Legal Services and New Haven Legal Assistance clients.
